Nitric Acid, HNO3, is a strong oxidizing, corrosive acid. Nitric acid is soluble in water and its solution is colorless and transparent at room temperature. The properties of aqueous solutions with different concentrations are different. The commercial concentrated nitric acid is an azeotropic mixture with a mass fraction of 69.2% (about 16 mol/L), a relative density of 1.42 and a boiling point of 122℃. If the mass fraction is large enough (commercially available with more than 95%), it is called fuming nitric acid. Nitric acid is easily decomposed under light. It should be kept in dark place in brown bottles or in frosted plastic bottles (not recommended). Contact with reducing agent is strictly prohibited. Concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid can be mixed at volume ratio of 1:3 to produce strong corrosive Aqua regia.
